Quickly becoming a popular settlement site for farmers in the mid-1800s, Wallace developed a strong dairy industry. The local butter factory ceased operation during the 1990s however the building is heritage listed and remains to this day. Visitors can stop by for a look at this well-maintained building. History buffs may wish to stay in the renovated former general store that was built in the mid-1800s. As well as being a general store, the Bed and Breakfast was at one time the local post office, the bank and a meeting place for locals after church on Sundays. Wallace is also home to a large organic walnut farm (visits available by appointment) as well as a deer farm. Fly fishing is on offer by appointment at the privately-operated Millbrook Lakes.
Wallace has also built a reputation for its annual ‘Wallace Wants A Wife’ event which is held at the local pub and attracts women from far and wide who are looking for love. The pub offers great meals and live music throughout the week and is a great place to stop for a meal.
